Want to dunk someone? Organizers of the community celebration and open house at Cochrane’s new aquatic and curling/multi-sport centre want your nominations for the dunk tank!
The dunk tank is part of the weekend of free family activities to celebrate all the programs and activities at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre, including the Jayman BUILT Aquatic Centre and Fireside of Cochrane Fitness Centre.
“A dunk tank is a huge part of an event like this,” says Robin Mitchell, general manager of Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. “We’ve got the mayor, firefighters, news personalities and local business owners on the schedule, but there’s room for more.”
The entire community is invited to a celebration of the whole sports centre facility on Saturday September 9 and Sunday September 10. It’s a special weekend to get in the pool and splash park, try the fitness centre, curling, a class in one of the program rooms, or watch one of the special presentations and performances.
Community members can pay to take a shot at dunk tank participants during the weekend event: three balls for $5 or seven balls for $10. All funds raised go to the Rock the Waves campaign to support the new facility.
Rock the Waves fundraising goal is $10.6 million in community contributions and sponsorships, with $4.9 million raised so far.
Other funding for the expansion came from the provincial sources ($22.7 million in approved Municipal Sustainability Initiative), federal programs ($2,330,122 of its federal Gas Tax Fund) and through the support of Cochrane and area residents, generous community organizations, developers, individuals and Rocky View County.
The community celebration and open house runs 11am until 3pm Saturday September 9 and Sunday September 10 and has free events for the whole family.
